Migration

The FTP Migration Manager subsection allows you to download files from a remote FTP server (your previous hosting provider for example).

The FTP Migration Manager cannot be used for uploading files over FTP from your local computer. If you need to upload files from your local computer, you can check the following category in our Knowledge base:

Academy » Hosting » Uploading files

To download files from a remote FTP server, you will need the following information:

  • Remote Host or IP address – this is the FTP host of your old web hosting provider. (e.g ftp.example.com). Please, note that if you try to connect to your previous hosting provider using your domain name, the transfer may fail. In such case, you need to use the IP address of your previous host’s FTP server – it should look something like 12.34.56.78.
  • Remote FTP Username – the FTP username at the remote server (e.g your old hosting account username).
  • Remote FTP Password – the FTP password at the remote server (e.g your old hosting account password).
  • Remote FTP Directory -the directory on the remote server where you would like to download the files from.
  • Local Server Directory – the directory on our hosting server where the remote files should be downloaded to.
  • Notify e-mail – some FTP downloads may take longer time to complete (big website with multiple files, etc.). If you specify an e-mail address in that field, the system will send you an e-mail once the FTP download is complete. This field is optional.

Information details

Once you specify all the details needed, click on the Initiate Download button to start the download. The page will refresh, and a screen showing the FTP download progress will be displayed.

Migration in progress

You can monitor the download progress and check details and errors about the transfer. You can cancel the download anytime using the Cancel Download button.

If the FTP download fails for some reason, you can restart the process using the Restart Download button. The button is available only when a transfer is cancelled or some errors have occurred during the download process.

Error

When you press the Restart Download button, the system will automatically fill all the fields with the information from your last transfer. You will only need to enter the Remote FTP Password again and click on the Initiate Download button.

The cPanel subsection allows you to easily migrate your cPanel account from your previous web hosting company – you can import your files, subdomains, parked domains, databases, mailing lists and mailboxes. You will need a full backup archive of your account, in tar.gz or tar format. You can import an archive file uploaded to your account with us, or you can download it using FTP or HTTP/HTTPS from a remote location.

A typical cPanel file name looks like this: backup-MM.DD.YYYY_HH-MM-SS_AccountName.tar.gz, where MM is for the month, DD – date, YYYY – year, HH – hours, the second MM – minutes, SS – seconds, AccountName – your cPanel account name. For example:
backup-12.1.2015_09-09-29_YourAccountNameHere.tar.gz– this is a cPanel backup file created on December 1st, 2010, 9 o’clock, 9 minutes and 29 seconds for the cPanel account “YourAccountNameHere”.

• Local file (on server)
This is a good option if you have already uploaded the cPanel archive file in one of your directories on the server. If you still haven’t, you can use FTP or the Control Panel’s File Manager section. Click on “Local file (on server)” and then “Locate” to select the cPanel archive. Make sure the correct file is selected, and press “Next” to continue.

• Remote file – FTP
This is a good option if you have the cPanel archive available on a remote FTP server. The archive file will be downloaded locally on our server during the process.

  • FTP server: Insert the FTP Server address where your cPanel archive is located (for example ftp.example.com or an IP address, i.e. 64.14.68.138).
  • FTP username: Type the FTP user for the remote FTP server.
  • FTP password: The password of the FTP user.
  • Path to file: Type the whole path to the cPanel archive, for example:
    /backups/cpanel/backup-12.1.2015_09-09-29_YourAccountNameHere.tar.gz

Click “Continue” to proceed.

• Remote file – HTTP

AttentionIt is recommended to use the “Remote file – FTP” option instead, as the FTP connection is more reliable for transferring bigger files.

The HTTP option is suitable if the cPanel archive is located on a remote HTTP server. The archive file will be downloaded locally on our server during the process.

HTTP address: Type “http://” or “https://”, followed by the HTTP server domain or IP address, as well as the path to the cPanel archive. For example:

http://example.com/backups/cpanel/backup-12.1.2015_09_09_29_YourAccountNameHere.tar.gz

or

https://64.14.68.138/backups/cpanel/backup-12.1.2015_09-09-29_YourAccountNameHere.tar.gz

HTTP user and HTTP password: If the path to that directory requires HTTP authentication (username and password), fill out the fields and click “Next” to continue.

After the archive is analyzed, you will need to choose what to import from your cPanel account.

Files

Files: If you check the “All files” option, all your files from the cPanel archive will be copied to the server. If you would like to browse through your existing files and directories on the server, click on the Icon icon, located just next to the “Files” title of this subsection — the “File Manager” section of your Control Panel will appear in a new window of your web browser.

Subdomains

Subdomains: Select the subdomains you wish to create. In case you want to import their files and directories, select the “Import files” option. If a given subdomain already exists, you can delete it.

Parked domains

Parked domains: Choose the domains you wish to park to your hosting account. Note that domain parking can take several minutes to be approved by the system.

Databases

Databases: Choose the databases you want to import to your hosting account. If you want to choose all listed databases, check the button on the left side of the “Databases” heading.

Mailing Lists

Mailing Lists: Choose the mailing lists you want to import to your hosting account.

Mailboxes

Mailboxes: Choose the mailboxes you want to import to your hosting account. If you want to choose all of the listed mailboxes, check the button on the left side of the “Mailboxes” title. If a given mailbox already exists, all the mail located in the cPanel archive will be added, without deleting the existing mails in this mailbox.

Mailbox passwords cannot be imported, so you will need to enter one password, which will be set for all mailboxes being imported. You can later change individual mailbox passwords via the Mail Manager section of the hosting Control Panel. You will notice that there is a password strength indicator below the “Password” field. It will update in real time as you are entering your new password. There are five distinct levels of password strength: Very WeakWeakFairStrong, and Very Strong.

Note: The cPanel data importer supports email data in the MAILDIR format. Email data in specific formats such as DBOX (sdbox/mdbox) will not be imported, and the interface will report that no data is found in the archive.

When you are ready with the selection you can proceed with the migration by clicking the “Continue” button.

The next step shows the selected items – confirm by clicking “Continue”. When you have confirmed your choice, wait for the system to process the required actions. After the migration is complete, you will see the status of the performed tasks. Please note that you can cancel the operation by clicking the “Cancel” button at any of the steps.

The Import from a Personal Backup subsection allows you to import data to the account from a backup file, which is created through the Backup section of the hosting Control Panel. The backup could be created on the same hosting account you are importing into or on another hosting account on the same platform. Thus, this section allows moving data between different hosting accounts.

File format

The Import from a Personal Backup section would expect a file that is created through the hosting Control Panel’s Backup section. As such, the name of the file would be one of the following:

  • files.tar.gz
  • mail.tar.gz
  • mysql5.tar.gz

The interface will also accept the extracted version of the tar.gz backup files (eg. files.tar).

Selecting the file for import

You can select the file for import through one of the following methods:

  • local file – if you have the file uploaded on the hosting space, you can select it through the Local file (on server) option.
  • remote file (FTP) – with this option, you can select a file that is on a remote FTP server.
  • remote file (HTTP) – if you have the file on a remote server, you can select/upload it over HTTP/HTTPS. This option is not suitable for very large files – it is recommended to use FTP instead.

Selecting the data to import

On the next screen of the wizard, you will have to select the data you would like to import on the account.

  • Files

When importing a backup that contains files (files.tar.gz), you can select the data you would like to import. The first section of the screen allows you to choose where to import the data – to the main subdomain (www) or the private folder. If the backup file contains subdomains as well, you will see a section where you can choose which subdomains to import. Note that you will not be able to import data in already existing subdomains. The interface will allow you to delete the existing subdomain prior to importing data to it. If you uncheck the Import files checkbox, then the selected subdomains will be just created, but no files will be imported in them.

  • Databases

When importing a backup that contains databases (mysql5.tar.gz), you will see a list of the database dumps that are in the file. If the database exists on the account, you will see a link to delete/remove it prior to importing data to it.

  • Mails

When importing a mail backup (mails.tar.gz), you will see a list of mailboxes that the archive contains. If a given mailbox already exists, all the mail located in the archive will be added without deleting the existing mails in this mailbox. If you uncheck the option Import messages for newly created mailboxes, the mailboxes will be simply created without importing messages in them. Note that mailbox passwords cannot be imported, so you will need to enter one password which will be set for all mailboxes that will be recreated. You can later change the mailbox passwords via the Mail Manager section of the hosting Control Panel.
Finish the import

When you are ready with the selection, you can proceed with the migration by clicking on the Continue button.

After the migration is complete, you will see the status of the performed tasks. Please note that you can cancel the operation by clicking the Cancel button at any of the steps.
